During the operations against Pakistan in December, 1971, Wing Commander Gandharva Sen was commanding a Signal Unit. His unit stopped functioning only once despite the fact that it was subjected to twenty-nine enemy air attacks. Even on that one occasion, the disruption of power supply and damage to the equipment was rectified in about half an hour. When his Unit was called upon to perform the additional role of Air Defence Direction Centre, he rendered valuable assistance in arranging air defence of the tactical areas, protection of our own aircraft on offensive missions and organising aggressive action over enemy territory in the form of sweeps. Apart from the operational tasks directly connected with the Unit, he also carried out the task of training a large number of personnel from the Air Force to enable them to man the low level reporting system which functioning very well during hostilities.

Throughout, Wing Commander Gandharva Sen displayed courage, professional skill and devotion to duly.

Flight Lieutenant Kunwar Yogendra Singh posted to a Signals Unit, was charged with the responsibility of controlling a section of Gnat aircraft of an operational squadron on the 3rd September, 1965. While the section of Gnat aircraft was giving cover to another section of Mysteres engaged in close support to the Army, Flight Lieutenant K.Y Singh broadcast information accurately regarding all movement of aircraft approaching the sector in which the Gnats and Mysteres were operating and when the enemy aircraft reached the sector he deftly positioned the section of Gnats in such a manner that it was possible to achieve the first ever kill of a Pakistani F-86 Sabre Jet by a Gnat which, as it is known was piloted by Squadron Leader T. Keeler. Flight Lieutenant KY Singh was also responsible for many more successful intercept ions on the 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th September, 1965. On more than three such occasions he was in the control cabin giving broadcast control to own aircraft even though his Unit was under attack by enemy aircraft. Such coolness of head and unflinching dedication to the work on hand was possible because the officer possessed a thorough knowledge of his primary tasks and of the performance of the various aircraft he was controlling.

Flight Lieutenant KY Singh displayed a great amount of keenness and as at the operations room continuously without taking any rest especially on the first two days. He displayed a high sense of duty and resourcefulness.

While in Command of Signal Unit, Wing Commander Kirpal Singh Sufi was entrusted with the responsibility of training technical personnel on a new type of equipment. In spite of the meager staff at his disposal, he got down to this task with devotion and was successful in training a large number of officers and men within a short period of eight months. During this period, the mobility of his unit was also tested, without any adverse reflection. Wing Commander Sufi was solely responsible for this good all round performance.

As Officer Commanding of another signals Unit, Wing Commander Sufi has been responsible for improving the administrative efficiency of the unit and its operation alertness. By good example and tact he has been able to knit the unit personnel into a highly trained and efficient team. He has also been able to establish very effective liaison with local civil agencies to make the Air Defence reporting system of the area a success.

Flying Officer Chandra Shankara Narayana was commissioned in the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) Branch of the Indian Air Force in June, 1968. Since February, 1971, he has been serving with a Unit engaged in sensitive activities.

Since his arrival at the unit, Flying officer Shankara Narayanan showed an extremely keen interest in his duties. His appreciation of his responsibilities was far beyond his age and service experience. His discharge of his duties and responsibilities was always carried out with unfailing dedication.

During the Indo-Pak operations in December 1971, Flying Officer Shankara Narayanan, as a Detachment Commander located in advanced operational area in Punjab Sector, showed his merits and capabilities to even greater heights. Even under frequent enemy air actions, he steadfastly and with dedicated zeal not only carried out his duties but also was a source of inspiration to all airmen under him. His efforts contributed substantially to our Air-operation in Punjab Sector.

Flying Officer Chandra Shankara Narayanan displayed leadership and devotion to duty in the best traditions of the Indian Air Force and has rendered distinguished service of a high order. He is awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal.
